The FDA maintains a list of medication shortages on its Drug Shortages webpage, which greatly impacts commercial pharmacies trying to fill prescriptions of those drugs. A compounding pharmacy, however, is able to obtain the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and compound it in the most appropriate way for each individual patient.
Sometimes certain forms or dosages of a particular medication may be permanently discontinued, but we are able to follow the same protocol as when there are shortages and create a custom medication for the patient. It is important to note that if a drug has been discontinued due to safety reasons, we are not able to compound it in our pharmacy. The safety of our patients is our number one priority. Progress Pharmacy is licensed and regulated by the State Board of Pharmacy and follows all USP guidelines when compounding medications.
